A website translation proxy is a server that sits between your visitors and your website. When somebody requests a translated URL, the proxy fetches the original page from your server, translates the text inside the HTML, and returns the translated page. Your site is never modified, and you do not install anything in it. The translated pages live on your own domain, usually under a language path such as /es/ or /ja-jp/.

It is good for SEO, and it is the main reason to choose a proxy over a browser-only widget. Because the page is translated before it is sent, a search engine receives a complete page in the target language at its own URL, and can index and rank it. A browser-only translation leaves the crawler looking at your original language, so no additional pages ever enter the index. Proxylang adds hreflang tags and per-language sitemaps on top so each language is declared as an alternate of the others.

A plugin runs inside one platform and stores translations in that platform’s database, so it only works for sites built on that platform and it has to keep up with the platform’s updates. A proxy runs in front of any site, whatever it is built with, and needs no access to your code or your database. The trade-off is the dependency: a plugin lives in your stack, while a proxy sits in your request path.

Only the first request for a given page in a given language does translation work. That result is cached across 300+ edge locations, so every later visitor is served the finished page from the location nearest to them. You can also pre-translate the site before launch so no visitor ever waits for a first request.

Yes. Content rendered on the server is translated in the HTML the proxy returns. Content that appears after the page loads — results from an API, reviews, product listings, anything added by JavaScript — is translated as it appears. You do not re-run anything when you publish new content.

Requests for your original language are served normally, and translated pages fall back to the last good cached copy rather than failing. Configuration is cached too, so a problem reaching our own systems does not stop translated pages being served.
